and wanted to share this with you, Linda's Indian that she tiled and that stood watch over her home for the studio tour last weekend. I didn't realize she was home or would have shown you INSIDE this fabulous place...

Just returned from the farmers market and the BOUNTY of goodness there. Have been reading Michael Pollan and am inspired to cook and freeze my way through the upcoming season.

As August carries on I start to think of the changing season fast approaching and the garden and farmers markets overflowing with fresh produce.
The smell of fresh basil filled the kitchen as Tess and I made pesto to freeze for the winter.
gather these ingredients;
3 cups fresh (packed) basil leaves
3 - 4 cloves garlic
pinch of salt
3/4 cup fresh Parmesan
1/4 cup pine nuts
1/4 cup olive oil
Put all ingredients except the cheese and olive oil in a food processor...drizzle the olive oil in slowly as it processes. To eat it now, stir in the grated cheese and toss with warm pasta and tomatoes...
or leave the cheese out and spoon into ice cube trays. Once frozen pop out the cubes into a freezer bag for single servings to enjoy all winter long.
This is the story....
we were once a book group, but found it harder and harder to be reading the same book at the same time, so we decided to become a Mahjong group. My grandmother played for I would guess 75 or 80 years. I have my great aunts' set and as soon as we sat down to learn and I heard the clicking of those tiles it took me straight back to my grandmothers house and watching and listening as the women played and chatted and drank their cocktails.
I hosted last night and we dined on the FRESH mozzarella cheese that we made the night before...if only my tomatoes were not green, this would have come entirely from my house and garden...love that!
but back to Mahjong....this is a game of strategy and a little luck, an almost meditative, ritualistic process that takes a huge amount of concentration and is great exercise for those aging brain cells, not to mention the tiles are simply beautiful. We are quite addicted...
I'd be curious to know if you have played or have memories of your mothers or grandmothers playing.

I have the pleasure of participating in a neighborhood garden....coming together with friends to grow and harvest a bountiful meal....knowing where every bit comes from, having a hand in much of it. Salad greens, green peppers, broccoli, jalapenos for the casserole and herbs....all from our garden. Peaches from Palisades via the farmers market.
The broccoli growing huge...so tender, like nothing you eat from a grocery store...
all the plants growing so big and happy...

We gathered in beautiful evening light to savor a meal from the garden.
Our book group met just last week after reading Barbara Kingsolvers, 'Animal, Vegetable, Miracle' and had another fresh feast....including homemade fresh mozzerella cheese!
There was plenty to feast on tonight and some to take home as well....
everyone feeling fat and happy....
Now if only we had enough grapes to make our own wine....maybe next year.
