VERY early this morning we took Tess to the airport to go back to school. The blur could very well be my eyes, or maybe I was falling asleep as I snapped it....
Have you ever been to the Denver airport? I think it is one of the coolest airports around....and the DIA art collection is really quite impressive and fun to wander around and explore. This is where we did our hugging and kissing and sending off.....
This sculpture was to be the center piece of the DIA art collection. 'Mustang' by New Mexico artist Louis Jimenez. Once, during a Longmont Art in Public Places meeting, when we were having trouble with an artist that was a couple of months behind schedule, we laughed when we heard that Jimenez was 10 years late in delivering his scuplture to DIA. Just last year though a tragic accident occurred where this sculpture fell on Jimenez in his studio and killed him. I don't believe this Mustang was ever meant to roam the halls of Denver International Airport.
It would have been fun to share more images with you, but the hour of the morning and all....well... next time.
DIA reminds me of the mountains along the front range so here are some images Tess shot while she was in town.
and mom....shooting a photo, or looking off toward Ohio...missing the kiddo already.
off she goes...
and it must have been like a blink of an eye while you were holding her close...
but she'll be back - and it looks and sounds as if you had a wonderful time...
beautiful images Steph...
sending love

It's so hard to let them go...and this is the end of her last year...such an exciting time for her. Endings and beginnings. She may very well end up back in the Denver area, if not right away, then in a few years. Mine all few away and travelled the world, living helter skelter and loving the excitement of it all...but they've all come home to nest in their 30's. It's an interesting phenomena.
We'll be checking out DIA in a few weeks so I'll be looking at the art exhibited there!

secretly,
you must be so very proud!

you are missing her

Great photos and post Steph. So tragic about the Mustang sculpture! I have been through DIA, but it was maybe 10 years ago.
That's not to say I haven't been in Denver many times. I grew up in New Mexico, and we skied in Colorado often.
I'm glad that you had such a nice time with Tess.
Thanks so much for your perfect, supportive words on my blog.

but just think...in a few months she might be back for good (or at least awhile). it is hard. i cry every time i leave ny and my mom is always sad my entire last day. she tries hard not to show it, but i can tell...
i love how DIA looks from a distance....like a cross between a Native American teepee village and some settlement from outer space.

Oh, those airport scenes are difficult, aren't they? And then when you get back to an empty home...well, it's tough being a mom with a daughter so far away! Thank goodness for phone calls and internet! Beautiful images here. That is a very sad story about Louis Jimenez and his sculpture. xoxox

Was just blog skipping when I saw the mustang. It is an incredible piece of sculpture that I get to see often when I drive through the Hondo Valley. Luis was a bigger than life incredible artist that New Mexico misses very much! I'm not sure, but I think his wife, Susie, is in the process of finishing up that huge mustang. He was in the process of connecting the mustang head to the body when his accident happened. What a tragic lose...

Oh hey ! I missed this post....But I have BEEN to Lius' studio in NM. We were out in the MIDDLE OF NOWHERE in the desert and found it...There was a purple and blue post painted and my friend said...THAT HAS GOT TO LEAD TO AN ARTISTS STUDIO.
LETS CHECK IT OUT. He invited us in - not just to see the studio and the pieces he was working on (at the time it was sculpture for McArthur Park here in LA) but right into his home where we sat and talked with he and his wife. He let us take pictures and everything. This horse is gorgeous and I have not checked his art in a long while. It was so fun to seee this and have the memory sparked (thank you) He had lots of young kids working for him...mixing paints and putting on the medium he was using for the sculpture...pretty kool day. This horse is gorgeous !
Who knewww the airport has such beauties ! Everything in Denver seems positively gorgeous to me. Including you...and Your Beanie. Mom. That must be so hard - each time you have to let her go. You are so sweet ... Tess is lucky.
