One of the first gifts Mr R gave me was Lola, this paper mache doll...perched high above the Mango Studio, she's always looking over me.
We saw paper mache in San Miguel in many shapes and sizes, these are old molds in a Museum shop used to make girls like Lola...
set in the Jardin for the Day of the Dead festivities...(this beauty as a preview for Rebecca's virgin a day HERE)
and greeting us larger than life in Belle Arts, this couple probably used for the San Miguel festival.
Paper mache devils in Jennifer Haas's Rancho Jaguar museum (you'll be seeing more of her collection in upcoming posts)
Rebecca took us to a paper mache factory where I imagine much of the paper mache dolls and fruit we see in shops in Mexico and the US are made.
every step made completely by hand...we were given a demonstration on how they make a calavera mask...
then we were set loose to roam (and shop!) among the brightly colored forms...
Most of us walked away with armloads of wonderful paper mache goodies...
travel to see more of Mexico without leaving your chair...HERE
fantastic post,
poetry for paper!
and perfect capture of deb!
if you loved this day, and paper mache, be sure and visit my post, paperlicious.....

I too
have Lolas
both small and large
many of the Lolas
live
in the "dead zone"
as we used to call it
now
day by day
the Lolas
infuse
life
into this
now cold
and lonely space
living the "and"
of contradictions...
I truly love this post
wishing you all well
and that all zones
might BE enlivened
and inhabited
by the lovely Lolas...

Love the photo spread of your visit, and I love those winged hearts! Can't wait to see other places you visited. How did you ship, (or did you carry on the flight), all the things you bought? Had to be a load by the looks of Deb's bagfull! So many beautiful things.
I'm also looking forward to A Virgin a Day. I will post at first, then be out of town for a week, (A trip to Washington DC), then pick it up where I left off when I return. Be prepared for some really unusual Virgin business, (Rebecca told me the phrase "Virgin business" made her laugh)
Take care and be well. Great pics. Thanks for sharing.
Peace.

I love paper mache and just returned from San Miguel at the beginning of Oct. I saw many of the beautiful things from your post but am so disappointed I missed that paper mache factory! I know I would have come home with arm fulls of those hearts and figures. Oh well, another trip. Enjoying all your Mexico shots.

I am looking of a wholesale factory in Mexico that knows how to manufacture paper mach bracelets.
We are looking to manufacture approximately 24 designs x several thousand per design.
If you can help, please contact me
