Warm glow...snow continues to fall
I ventured out in it last night for an artist talk in Ft Collins and to see the traveling exhibit Innovators and Legends, Generations in Textiles and Fibers. Three of my former teachers are represented as well as alumni and pretty much a whose who in fiber art. Very inspirational and wonderful to reconnect with old friends.
I have a big exhibit coming up in the spring and this gave me the needed kick in the pants to start getting some of my ideas out of the sketchbook and into the world.
and now the amazing world of Jose Fuster...a kindred spirit of Isaiah Zagar's Magic Garden, Anado McLauchlin and Gaudi
perhaps my favorite place in Cuba...
the amazing Fusterlandia...the artist has created a magical world with tile and painting that fills his entire neighborhood, more than 80 of his neighbors homes, parks and fences

We returned from a pretty amazing trip to Cuba where we experienced a lot of what Havana has to offer. It's a complicated place that has the feel of a decaying old world city with pops of lively contemporary art and music. I'll be sharing much more in the coming days so stay tuned!

"In reality, the Callejón de Hamel is a heavy load of poetic images and sculpture that you have to live through, as you have lived it in the rumba, in all of the goings on that take place around it. This is, for many, a thing of magic, because it is the result of a conversation with the orishas over a period of many years. It's where you can see landing that white dove of Obbatalá that flies and flies and flies until it finds its place here."
we were here too late to experience the Rumba music that fills this alleyway every Sunday but did get to experience the art and images born of the Santeria...the most practiced religion of Cuba

It was a place full of rich imagery and strong emotion.
looking back over the past year...so much has happened and I treasure this blog as a way to look back, reflect and remind myself of the good, the fortunate and wonderful things that have come my way as well as the devastating.
the flood that my community and those nearby are still trying to recover from is one that I am reminded of nearly every day. Peoples lives and homes, roads and river beds...the greenway that was so intrictly woven into our daily lives, will take years to restore.
I visited the nearby town of Lyons the other day and was struck by the level of devistation, familiar places that are unrecognizable...but people both near and far are rallying, rebuilding and helping their neighbors, although there is still much to do.
There are bright spots of hope around every corner...stories of love and support and huge hearts
As the holidays wrap up and a new year is right on the horizon
I have to focus on the creative spirit that I find sprouting all around...because art saves

we are so fortunate...to have a little library in our neighborhood
my neighbor Steph is a research librarian and has a very talented husband and father-in-law who together created this wonderful little lending library in the image of their sweet little home.
borrow a book, leave another book...
I have many books to lend this little shelf ...
and I have never read The Sun Also Rises
you can find a little library near you...how lucky we are to have one right across the street!
That's where I'm finding some JOY today
a week of work followed by an art filled weekend in DC...SO full of inspiration and we only experienced a very small bit of this national treasure of ours....the Smithsonian Museums

we loved the neighborhood right away...this lovely Tacqueria right next door

also next door this work of art of civil rights era photographs on an abandoned building...
I knew I loved the graffiti art but did not know until looking up this work I saw in the National Gallery of Art by Glenn Ligon that the grafitti was done by JR...of which I am a small part of one of his amazing projects.
Wow. We were right in the middle of it...
